Mrs. Nesbitt has worked our way down to the letter F for ABC Wednesday Anthology and/or ABC Wednesday Round 3 See these for other fascinating F entries.
I have many photos of butterflies that have landed on flowers, but I wanted to capture them in flight. These two are still fluttering their way to lunch. I read somewhere that butterflies were originally called Flutterbys, and that the word butterfly, which we use, was originally intended as a joke. Do you suppose that's true?
I couldn't resist adding this Fluttering Fairy in Flight seen at the Berkeley Kite festival.

I thought flutterbys was the silly version?! How did you catch those in flight so brilliantly? Wonderful.

Yes, I'd heard that Flutterby was the Spoonerism of Butterfly - though it could be the other way round I pussose!!
Lovely pics - great choice for F.

Reminds me very much about hang-gliders, para gliders and that kind i free flight. I liked them.
Oh what beauty and whimsy! Love your F Granny!
Looks like men in wingsuits flying around after jumping out of a plane :-)
Flutterfly?! Sure, it makes more sense than butterfly, and it counts as another F word too. It's almost as much fun to pronounce as the German Schmeterling .
That kite is fantastic.
Flutterby certainly makes more sense, although butterfly seems more lyrical. Regardless, though, of whichever term is more original, your photos are GORGEOUS! I have a weak spot for fluttering fairies.
Oh, butterflies in flight! Don't they have a mystical, fantasy-like way? The little fairy is sweet too!
Kisses from Nydia.
PS: You know your photo in your profile? My son loves it, he says you must have been a beautiful young woman, because you do look beautiful now you're a granny (his words!). I wanted to tell you this long before but kept forgetting!
Lovely Flighty pictures.
Thanks for the marvellous comment on Ferries.
What Fabulous Fotos! I've never heard that about the word "butterfly" but it might be true! I love your photos and wish I could have managed better shots when I was at the Butterfly Gardens in Victoria last month!
Great use of the F.
Butterflies are one of my favorites.
I thought about you the other day when I made a Granny Smith Apple Pie.
Martha and I ate the whole thing in 2 days.
Thanks for the visit,
Troy and Martha
Fluttering fight is a wonderful title for I had wondered how I might make a post out of butterflies, but I couldn't think so I did fountain pens instead. Your butterfly pictures are lovely.

Beautiful photos! I have been so excited to capture some butterflies on my flowers this year, but to catch them in flight is truly amazing. Great job!
What a beautiful pair of photos. How do you manage to capture the butterflies in flight? Incredible.
I like your theory about the flies & dark...it does kind of match up, but I have no idea why.
Fabulous set of Fs!
A very creative idea. Flurrerby! Great.
Hi Granny Smith! Flutterbys is a good word I think! We in Holland call them "vlinders".Your pictures are very colourful and beautiful!
I much prefer 'Flutterbys' I grew up calling them that and still do. I also love the Kite and my Jane would too... Thank you for you kind comment today... when Jane gets back home I just know she will be beaming with all thenice comments about her and our CaraJade.
Love the butterfly shots- especially the Monarch.
I grew up in Butterfly-Town USA (Pacific Grove, California) which is a popular wintering-over spot for the Monarchs.
Clever and beautiful photos!
Please stop by for a little cake and ice cream. . .happy birthday, dear friend. Sending love and best wishes!

Lovely photos - happy birthday!
Happy Birthday, DearHeart.
Happy Birthday
One of the things I like most about the Internet is the ability to check facts. One of the things I hate is the ability to check facts. I wish it were true the butterfly came from flutterby, but it appears not to be true.

great post. love the pictures of the butterflies
Lovely butterfly photos - you've done so well! I love the fairy kite, too.
When I see butterflies I always want to take a picture, but I either don't have my camera or I can't get a good focus. I love your shots. My contribution is about a special farm that used to located near my town in Coastal BC. I invite you to come see. -- Margy
Nice flutterbies, not easy to put them on picture when flying.
